  • OLPC Laptops to Run by Solar Energy

    The much publicized OLPC laptop has already seen enough success in the remote corners of the world. Developed by One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), a non-profit organization, the laptop has already attracted the attention of many. This organization aims to provide all school children of the world with a laptop by 2015. This laptop is primarily designed for the school children of the third world countries where the governments cannot afford to give a highly-priced laptop to all the school children of the country. In 2006, the price of an OLPC laptop was set at US$188 which can be decreased to US$100 in 2008.

    One of the problems of running laptop in poor countries, specially in the villages, is lack of enough electricity. However, it seems that OLPC organization has at last found a way to get out of this problem as they started shipping solar-powered OLPC XO laptops in several countries. In fact, 500,000 solar-powered OLPC netbooks have already been deployed in the countries like Rwanda, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Haiti, and Nepal.

    Though OLPC XO laptops are usually sold to the governments in a large units, this laptop is also sold to general users in a Give one, Get one program in which one can donate a laptop to a child of a third world country for $199 or can donate one and get one for himself/herself for $399. This Get one, Give one program was launched last year. In fact, this program contributed more than 150,000 OLPC XO netbooks to its total production volume. The program has been started for the second time last month.

    Anyway, OLPC laptop has become one of the most popular gadgets in the world. In fact, this is the first netbook, low-priced and small-sized laptop, in the world.
