Nepal Government Introduced OLPC Project in the Country

“One Laptop Per Child” project has been introduced in Nepal recently. Under the OLPC project, government has given $100 laptops to 16 students of fourth standard at the Janajyoti Lower Secondary School. OLPC Nepal project is providing technical support to the project.

OLPC is a project spearheaded by MIT professor Nicholas Negroponte. OLPC aims at providing cheap laptop computers to the school children of the third world countries. OLPC’s XO-1 laptops will be given the school children of third world countries across the globe. XO-1 has been made only for this project and these laptops are sold only to the governments of the countries, no to any individual or company. OLPC is committed to provide technical support to the government of the interested countries.

The Economic Times reported:

The computer costs just $100 and is being provided to students of Janajyoti Lower Secondary School under a pilot project with the technical support of One Laptop Per Child Nepal project.
The laptops will help children in developing their knowledge and skills, said Janardan Nepal, director general at the Department of Education. The academic course of grade five has also been installed in the laptop to make learning easier, an official said.

OLPC has got enough response from different countries so far. Nepal has now embraced the project. It seems that Nepal government could realize the importance of introducing technology to the school children who will lead the country in future.
